Show Baby

Hi Bloggers

Well a couple of weeks ago something weird came over me and I lodged an entry in the card making competition held during a local annual show.   Not sure what came over me but hey it’s too late now.

I tossed and turned over what card to make, I had an original idea for a card then thought it may be too difficult to be hung on the display board at the show so I gave up on that idea.  Then I decided I would just go with a previous card that I made that I am pretty proud of.  You can see the post about that card here https://mtjohnson02.wordpress.com/2013/01/08/shabby-chic-yes-or-no/.

Gee, that was easy.  Well that’s what I thought.  I was telling a friend (she has entered scrapbook pages in the show in previous years and won some ribbons too),  that I was planning on entering the above mentioned card in the show one night last week and she said I should enter the baby card I made for my cousin last month.  You can see that card here in case you missed the previous post https://mtjohnson02.wordpress.com/category/baby-prints/.

Well if I was going to do that I would have to make another card because I had already posted this card off to my cousin.  So at 10am yesterday morning that’s exactly what I started to do.  Mind you the entry had to be submitted to the show steward by 4pm yesterday, so I was cutting it a bit short to start making a whole new card.

I had decided that I would make it a boy baby card just for a little variety.  I had every intention of basically copying the original card I had made but just in blue.  Subsequently, as all well laid plans go this didn’t happen.

Here is what I came up with.

P1020650This card is not as busy as the previous one I made for Emily but you can see the similarities.  I used whisper white and bashful blue card stock and bashful blue ribbon, dsp, and ink.

P1020651I kept the inside very simple too.

Well, I don’t have any grand illusions of winning a ribbon at the show, it was a good experience and now at least I have a boy baby card on stock if I happen to need one…. 🙂

The judging takes place today (although the show isn’t until next Wed, Thur & Fri), so I would like to wish all the entrants (whoever they may be) all the very best of luck.  I did notice that there were only about 6 entries before I submitted mine so I think it might be a difficult job for the judges.

I would love to hear your thoughts about my card so please leave me a comment.

Thanks for visiting.

In Wilderness turns 50

Hi Bloggers

Today’s card is one I was asked to make for a girl at work for her dad’s upcoming birthday.  When I asked her for some details of what she would like for the card this is the brief she gave me…..

1. Brown colours

2. Hunting theme

3. The word DAD on the card

4. The number 50 on the card

Whew!, that’s a specific brief.  Usually people just say oh make it pink and girly or something like that.  Well the brown colours, the words and numbers were the easy part BUT the hunting theme?   Mmmm I had to think about that one for a while.

I explained to Pam that I didn’t have a “hunting” stamp so to speak but I did have a stamp set that had a buffalo or is it a bison?  Pam loved the idea of the buffalo (aka bison), so I decided to run with it.

I was originally going to case a card made by the very talented Yvette Ashe, I even had the photo from her blog up on my laptop so I could copy it, however, once I started on this card I just ran with it and it turned out completely different to Yvette’s card.  So rather than saying I cased Yvette’s card I am saying I used her card for inspiration instead.

I guess sometimes creativity just takes over….lol

I started with early expresso card stock then added a layer of soft suede card stock, then another layer of crumb cake card stock.  I then added a layer of natural cosmopolitan DSP, added two strips of early expresso ribbon.  I stamped the buffalo (bison) in early expresso ink and then embossed it with early expresso embossing powder onto crumb cake and cut it out with one of my spellbinders.

Next I die cut out the word DAD and the number 50 in early expresso and then covered them in crystal effects so that they really pop.

I am over the moon with how well this card turned out and how quickly I got it done, it only took a couple of hours.  I really wasn’t too confident that I would be able to create a nice card with this brief.

I am also happy to say that Pam loves the card too.

Just Thinking with Parker’s Patterns

Hi bloggers

I hope you have all had a good week.  I am really looking forward to my weekend and a lot of quality craft time.

I want to show you what I originally started making a couple of weeks ago but had a bit of a hiccup and only got it finished tonight.  My lovely father-in-law had quadruple bi-pass heart surgery about two weeks ago, thankfully it all went very well and he is recovering exceedingly well.  Anyway I wanted to make him a card and a little gift box of his favourite sweets (Darrell Lea bullets and chocolate coated almonds), well that was the easy bit.  I was positive that I had ordered the new Just Thinking stamp set from the last Stampin’ Up! mini catalogue, but do you think I could find it when I was ready to use it…. NO!!!!

I tore my craft room apart and went slightly crazy looking for it.  Anyway long story short I ended up ordering another one so I could get this card made and sent off.  Subsequently I have found the original stamp and now have two. :{

I cased this card from a card I saw on Ann Schach’s blog but mixed it up a bit.  I used the now retired Parker’s Patterns designer series paper from the previous SU mini and Marina Mist, Very Vanilla, Not Quite Navy and Cherry Cobbler card stock.

I love how it turned out even if it is a very busy card.  I think I might just tweek the second “D” in DAD before I send it off though.

Get well card for RoyIf you look closely you will see that there are lots and lots of layers on this card.  I started with Marina Mist card stock and then basically went crazy from there on… lol

I embossed the greeting and surrounding frame with white embossing powder and cut out a second greeting and popped it up onto of the first.

I also decorated one of the gift boxes that Stampin’ Up! sell too so I could package Roy’s chocolates in  a matching container.

Get well goodie box for Roy - sideI kept the box decoration fairly simple but I did use the same DSP as the card.  I love making rosettes (although, admittedly I don’t make them too often), so I thought I would put one on top of the box.  I also made a tab at the front of the box so its a bit easier to open.  I used the ticket punch to make my tab.

Get well goodie box for Roy - topHere’s a better look at the top of the box.  I used my hot glue gun to attach the rosette to the box and the oval to the rosette.

Get well goodie box - insideHere’s what’s inside….. Yummy.  I tied the bag closed with some Marina Mist ribbon.  I know Roy is going to love this little treat.

Get well card & goodie boxSo there you have it, this project has taken  sooooo long to finish, but I’m glad it is AND I’m really happy with how it has turned  out.
